Allie climbed the steps of the owlery, paying close attention not to look down as she ascended into the tall tower. She wasn't big on heights and seeing the long drop below her would most likely cause her to become light-headed. As she reached the top of the stairs, she stopped for a minute to catch her breath. Why do they make it so high? she complained in her mind before laughing at herself.
She walked into the owlery, her eyes scanning the owls until she found her chocolate colored one. A smile spread across her lips as she walked over to her. She stroked her owl's head gently. "Hey girl. You know where to bring this right?" she said softly and pulled out a letter addressed to her parents. She gave it to the bird and watched as she flew out towards the horizon. Allie smiled softly and walked over to the window.
Without looking down, she looked out towards the horizon where the sun was just beginning to set. The sky was made up of various colors; reds, purples, oranges and pinks. It was absolutely beautiful. It was times like these when she was glad to be away from home. Living in a busy city didn't exactly provide beautiful experiences like these.

Jack decided to send an owl home, if he didn't, he just receive one from his worried parents. He scribbled a note on a spare piece of parchment and ran up to the owlery three steps at a time.
He entered the brightly lit room. Although it was sunset, the light was flooding in. He found his owl and set it on her way before he realised he wasn't by himself.
A girl stood by the window. He decided that it would be impolite not to say anything
"Hi. Nice view."

Allie jumped ever so slightly when another owl flew quickly pas the window. Followed closely by this owl was a voice. She turned around and saw a boy standing in the owlery as well. She smiled at the boy. "Hi. Yeah it's beautiful." She looked down at the ground and fiddled with the hem of her red blouse.
Talking to boys wasn't one of her strengths. Usually the words wouldn't form correctly and she would have to excuse her self claiming she felt ill. Something felt different though. He seemed nice enough so far. "My name is Allie. Allie Hartley. What's your name?" She smiled again at him once more and waited for his response.

The girl turned with a start, it may have been an owl, or it may have been the sound of his voice. 'Sorry if I startled you.'
Why had he started a conversation with her? Talking to girls wasn't exactly a strength of his, he'd start off fine, but then when he realised he was talking to a girl and that it was going well, he'd start worrying about screwing it up. That's when he'd go quiet, and mumble and get out of there as soon as was humanly possible. This thought process hadn't even finished before he'd introduced himself. 'Jack Fraser' he replied and returned the smile
'You sending an owl or waiting for one?' he asked

Allie shook her head. "You didn't startle me. The owl did. I wasn't expecting it." She laughed nervously and looked up again. "Nice to meet you Jack. What house are you in? I'm Gryffindor. 7th year and Prefect." Allie smiled proudly.
She took pride in her title because of how hard she had worked towards it. Her smile fell slightly however when she tried to figure out if it sounded as if she was gloating. "Not that it's really important or anything," she added quickly in hopes that he wouldn't think of her as stuck up.
"I just sent one. My parents like to be kept in the loop so I send them an owl every week. Kinda dorky I guess but I'm close to them." She shrugged slightly and brought her hand up to her hair, tucking a blonde piece of hair behind her ear. "What about you? Sending one or waiting for one?"

"I'm Gryffindor too, 6th, but I'm still kinda new here, that's why we may not have crossed paths before. Wow, prefect huh? Impressive."
He didn't know what being a prefect meant at Hogwarts, but the way she said it with such pride and the way a little smile played across her mouth, he felt that the compliment was needed there.
"Sending one, same with my parents too, well, I'm guessing what's going to happen is if I don't get one, they'll send one, it's better to send one before you receive a Howler, rather then after. And other then them I don't tend to get a lot of mail," Jack shrugged.

Allie felt her cheeks blush a soft pink. Mentally she scolded herself but she was glad for Jack's compliment. People sometimes took her pride for arrogance which was never the case. "Thanks. Oh you're new? Yeah that would probably explain it," she laughed quietly. "When did you come here?"
She listened as he pretty much said the same thing regarding his owl to his parents. She giggled when he mentioned receiving a Howler was not exactly what he wanted. "Yea, I made that mistake once. I was mad at my parents so I didn't write to them for a month. That Howler was so embarrassing. I thought I was going to die from humiliation."
She looked out the window again, replaying that incident in her mind. She shivered slightly and shook it out of her mind. Not something she wanted to relive. She looked back at Jack when he said he didn't really get much mail. "I don't either. Besides my parents, mail is very scarce. Hey, maybe we could write to each other or something. Kinda like a penpal type thing."
Allie thought for a moment and considered what she just said. Oh my gosh, how childish does that sound!? she thought to herself. "Only if you wanted to I mean. It is kinda lame..." Great, just like always, I mess it up. she thought sadly as she looked away again, her cheeks turning another shade at her embarrassment.

"Erm..." Jack couldn't actually remember when he had joined, but didn't want to sound stupid, "Less than a month ago, but just over a couple of weeks," he said finally. He laughed as she recounted her tale of the Howler, they were pretty embarrassing, it was nice to know that he wasn't the only one with completely humiliating parents.
She suggested penpals, but then quickly retracted her offer and turned pink, like she was embarrassed or something. "If the offer is still there, I'd like to be your penpal, but something tells me your not so keen now? If you've changed your mind that's cool, don't worry." But secretly Jack was more then a little disappointed, it would have been nice to get mail other then his bank statements telling him he had little to no money and nagging letters from his parents.

Allie nodded as he told her when he arrived, though he seemed a little unsure. He probably had all the reason to...adjusting to a new school was pretty stressful. He has a cute laugh she thought but mentally scolded herself. Don't start...
After looking away when offering the penpal suggestion, Allie looked back when he asked if the offer was still there. She was surprised he was even interested. She smiled sweetly at him and nodded her head, her eyes displaying how happy she was that he didn't think it foolish.
"It's not that I'm not keen on the idea. I just...well I thought you would think of me as immature or something. The truth is I love writing and I think it is a good way to express yourself. Especially if you are like me and can't verbalize things that well."

Allie seemed more then pleased to accept the offer of penpals without any hesitation, Jack was relieved that she hadn't retracted her offer because of anything he had said or done, and then she had though better of it!
"I know the feling. Writing can be preferable, if only because you can edit out what you say... and maybe sound fairly normal for a while!" Jack added jokingly. "Of course I don't think your immature, from what I've gathered about you so far, you're far from it," Jack said with a slightly more serious note to his voice, trying to sound as though this wasn't a joke, because it wasn't. Allie was definitely one of the more...normal... people that he'd met. He wasn't saying that people that he had met so far hadn't been normal, but they all had powers, or something more magical about them. Allie seemed...very understanding about things magical and muggle.

Allie laughed at his comment. "Exactly!" She smiled at him, surprised at how well she was communicating with him. It had been forever since she had connected this well with anybody, particularly of the male gender. It made her happy. Without her permission, she felt her cheeks blush at his compliment.
"Thank you," she said softly. She didn't know why but she felt extremely girly. She realized that she had been fiddling with her hair, subconsciously twirling it between two fingers. She brought her hand down quickly and put it into her coat pocket. Allie cleared her throat and looked away from Jack. Now her mind was going on a blank, startled by his slightly serious tone. Not that it was a bad thing, it just had caught Allie off-guard.
Now what? she thought.

Allie blushed, which then made him blush... Why was it so difficult to talk to girls?? After his compliment aswell, she went very quiet. ''Sorry if I've embarrassed you... you've gone pink! Yes, I can probably guess that I'm a hypocrite at this point,'' he said with a small laugh, and attempt to lighten the mood. He pulled some parchment and a quill out of his pocket and scribbled down his home address for her.
"If we're at school, we can always give letters when we see each other around. I mean if you want to see each other around of course...'' he left he question hanging but felt more then slightly embaarassed, if she'd wanted to hang out sometime, she'd have probably said that straight away.

Allie laughed when he called himself a hypocrite. Aw he is blushing too! she thought to herself. She thought it was cute when boys blushed. She watched him take out a quill and parchment and leaned forward slightly to see what he was doing. She realized that he was writing his address down, so she followed suit. She quickly pulled out her own quill and a piece of parchment and printed her name and address onto the slip of paper.
She held it out for him to take. She nodded when he said they could give each other the letters when they saw each other, and tried not to giggle when he quickly added his next statement. Finally, someone who isn't perfectly suave! He's just like me! She smiled at him. "Of course I'd like to see you around."

Jack was pleased that Allie hadn't turned him down, or given him a full list of terms and conditions. Her simplistic 'of course' was a fairly new reaction for him to receive.
He took her address and gave her his. She had feminine handwriting - very 'girly' He felt bad that his own scrawl had been so rushed and looked messy.
He went to leave the owlery. He looked back 'See you around then,' he turned quickly and left.
